Supporting sustainability together

Customer story

SAS is world leader in business analytics software and services. Their mission is to deliver proven solutions that drive innovation and improve performance. Athlon, their trusted partner for leasing solutions, is helping them innovate their mobility solutions.

Flexibility, mobility, sustainability
They are all vital to doing business in today’s marketplace. And they are the prime motivators behind a partnership between Athlon, the mobility solutions arm of DLL, and SAS. The payoff? A greener planet, employees with more free time and a mutually beneficial business relationship.

Mobility drives leasing solutions
Remco Korzaan is HR Director at the Dutch operation of SAS, one of the world’s biggest providers of business analytics software and a company that puts sustainability at the heart of its business practice. “A big part of my job is not just the day-to-day management of people, but to try to find innovative ways to improve their well-being. And there’s one area that’s starting to have real impact: fleet management. However, the term is not really accurate anymore. It’s about mobility.” SAS

In the past, car leasing companies encouraged employees to use all of their budget by choosing the most expensive car possible. That changed when SAS started working with leasing solutions partner Athlon two years ago. Since then, the company has introduced a budget not for a car, but for an idea. Mobility.

Flexible working and living
"Together we identified a global trend towards a more flexible way of both working and living," explains Korzaan. He mentions that while SAS has worked with other car leasing companies, Athlon was the one that was really responsible for the mobility idea.

Korzaan: "SAS employees now get a budget they can spend in a way that suits them. If they don’t want to use it all for a car, they can spend the rest on some other form of transport, or even a separate need, such as their children’s education.” Although a mobility budget involves more investment initially for SAS, in the long run it saves money and improves everyone’s quality of life. Both partners believe mobility has to be linked to sustainability.

A trusted partnership like this will help overcome the obstacles that still lie in the way of getting more people behind the wheel of an electric car. "

Promoting greener lifestyles
“A major part of giving flexibility to employees is about helping them adopt greener lifestyles,” explains Korzaan. “We have begun to introduce electric and hybrid cars into the fleet and for the last two years SAS has been using a fully electric car to ferry clients to the office. Besides 20% of the company’s fleet is now either hybrid or fully electric. There has also been a switch to low-emission cars." Erik Sol, a consulting manager at SAS, switched to a low-emission car, saving him over € 4,000 a year. In the last 18 months alone, CO2 emissions from the SAS fleet have fallen by 15%.

Flexibility, mobility, sustainability. They are the drivers behind the successful leasing solutions offered by SAS.

Pushing the boundaries of leasing solutions
Intensive personal contact has been important to Korzaan and to DLL’s account manager Ronald Schenk. "It is great," says Schenk, "to have found such a partner in SAS, who also looks at mobility as an important contributor to employee satisfaction and a sustainable future. By putting our heads together and making it a joint effort, we are able to push the boundaries of car leasing and support the mind shift of our lease car drivers to think in terms of sustainable mobility."

Athlon is supporting us with these challenges because we both want to keep our position as frontrunners in the area of mobility and sustainability. "

A trusted partnership
"It’s good to be able to give each other honest feedback," Korzaan agrees. "A trusted partnership like this will help overcome the obstacles that still lie in the way of getting more people behind the wheel of an electric car. Athlon is supporting us with these challenges because we both want to keep our position as frontrunners in the area of mobility and sustainability. It’s quite a journey, but we feel that Athlon is more than happy to run with us."
