Financing the Circular Economy with Cisco Green Pay

Industry:Software and Technology

Imagine a world where every product is designed with its entire lifecycle in mind—where the journey from creation to disposal is replaced by a loop of reuse, remanufacture, and recycling. As a global technology leader, Cisco is playing its part in the charge towards making this idea a reality

Cisco has set a goal to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by 2040. One key part of its environmental sustainability strategy is evolving to a circular business model, which extends the life of products through reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. In addition, the company has a goal to incorporate Circular Design Principles into 100% of its new products and packaging by fiscal 2025. As of fiscal 2024, 96% of new Cisco products and packaging incorporate Circular Design Principles. Powering the future of circularity

To help promote circularity, DLL and Cisco Capital worked together to deliver a new payment solution. Cisco Green Pay incentivizes customers to return products enabling them to be reused, recycled, or remanufactured for resale. The program provides financing for customers' technology strategies while aligning with their sustainability goals. This flexible IT payment solution can simplify lifecycle management and help maximize profitability by streamlining project costs into fixed, predictable payments.

Cisco Green Pay is available to companies around the world to extend the product lifecycle.1 Think about the device you're using right now. Whether it's a laptop or smartphone, traditionally, its end-of-life journey could lead to a landfill. Unlike everyday items like corrugated carton boxes or cans, giving new life to electronics presents unique challenges.

Cisco Green Pay is anchored on four tenets:

  • Customers receive up to a 5% incentive on their Cisco hardware purchase and enjoy fixed payments with no interest over the term for easier budgeting.
  • At the end of the term, customers have the option to upgrade or return the hardware to Cisco.
  • Cisco recovers the product free of charge to be remanufactured, reused, or recycled.
  • Customers receive a certificate confirming the equipment has entered Cisco’s Circular Economy Program. 2

With Cisco Green Pay, customers can access the latest sustainability solutions to help support their sustainability efforts, stay ahead of the curve, and extend the lifecycle of the equipment.

“Partnering with DLL on this initiative aligns perfectly with our sustainability strategy and commitment to our customers. The teams have worked incredibly well together, creating a financing solution that supports circularity and waste reduction, reduces upfront hardware costs for customers, and optimizes cash flow by spreading payments evenly over the term,” said Guido Kessler, Senior Director EMEA at Cisco Capital.

A global partnership in sustainability

As Cisco Green Pay launched, DLL was one of the first customers to use this payment solution in the Netherlands for its data center upgrade. The goal was to replace core switches and revamp the data center network infrastructure. The transaction was facilitated by NTT DATA, Cisco’s largest technology partner.

As part of the Cisco Green Pay program, DLL benefited from an interest-free offer and a 5% incentive on the hardware purchased. DLL will return the equipment at the end of the term, which will lower their total cost of usage, enabling it to take advantage of the latest, most energy efficient technology.

Commitment to sustainability

This collaboration between Cisco, DLL, and NTT DATA exemplifies how businesses can leverage Cisco Green Pay to help address their sustainability goals. By opting for Cisco Green Pay, DLL not only upgraded its data centers but also supports its commitment to sustainability.

“This deal not only offers DLL access to the latest technology, but also supports their business goals. And it aligns perfectly with our sustainability ambition, including our targets to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations. NTT Data was a trusted advisor in this project for DLL, and implemented the solution together with DLL, showcasing our strong partnership. We are proud to be a part of this pioneering initiative in Europe with Cisco and DLL”, said Harald de Wilde VP Sales NTT DATA Netherlands.

DLL’s use of Cisco Green Pay highlights the potential for businesses to address their sustainability goals through innovative payment solutions.
