Talking to the experts: What are the trends in cybersecurity?

We live in a world where intelligent systems, such as AI, are constantly learning how to overcome cybersecurity defenses, such as firewalls. Every day, organizations encounter millions of new attacks, driven by AI's ability to adapt and innovate.

How do organizations handle this new reality? And how is AI, in addition to being part of the “offense”, essential to cybersecurity defenses? The last part of our cybersecurity series with leading cybersecurity solution provider and trusted DLL partner, Palo Alto Networks, delves into how AI is reshaping cybersecurity and cybersecurity trends. Bob van Eeuwijk, DLL International Program Manager interviews Jeremy van Doorn, Palo Alto Networks’ Senior Director of Technical Solutions.

DLL: How does AI impact the world of cybersecurity?

AI's impact on cybersecurity is massive, affecting both offensive and defensive strategies. Palo Alto Networks receives data from firewalls and other solutions globally, detecting an average of 1.7 million new attacks daily, thanks to AI. Bad actors use AI to adjust existing attacks, reducing the time to exfiltrate data from 15 hours to just three hours. To defend against such sophisticated attacks, AI is essential in cybersecurity defenses. Palo Alto Networks has integrated AI into all its solutions since 2018, automating responses to attacks and allowing employees to focus on proactive defense.

DLL: What trends do you see in the industry?

One notable trend is the rise of enterprise browsers, which allow companies to control access within a browser. This solution enables businesses to manage what employees and third-party contractors can access, ensuring data security without the need for VPNs or company laptops. Enterprise browsers can restrict access to sensitive information and provide features like watermarks to track data usage. Companies can adhere to regulations with the enterprise browser, and it offers the flexibility for employees to use their own devices.

DLL: Where do you see the cybersecurity industry going in the next five years?

In the next five years, AI involvement in cybersecurity will continue to grow, with quantum computing playing a significant role. Quantum computing can jeopardize unencrypted or non-quantum-ready encrypted data, making it crucial for businesses to use quantum-ready algorithms. With geopolitical unrest and well-funded nation-state actors, the threat landscape will expand, requiring robust defenses for valuable intellectual property. Companies need to ensure they are up to date with patching and versioning to protect against these evolving threats.
